Blue Economy Innovation Platform WA

26 June 2026

Fremantle at the Forefront of WA’s Ocean Innovation Push

Fremantle is set to play a leading role in Western Australia’s growth in the blue economy following the launch of the Blue Economy Innovation Platform WA (BEIP WA).

Part of the newly established Blue Economy Innovation Hub Australia (BEIH AUS), the platform has been created to build a coordinated system for marine and maritime innovation, supporting ventures from early development through to global market expansion.

Western Australia has long been recognised for its world-class marine science, industrial capability and access to highly productive ocean environments. With Fremantle’s strong maritime heritage, port infrastructure and innovation community, the city is well positioned as a key gateway for this next phase of growth.

BEIP WA introduces a structured pathway for ocean innovation across four service areas:

  • Gravity for diagnosis and incubation
  • Propel for acceleration
  • Dock for launch and landing support
  • Growth for community and ecosystem development

At the centre of the initial rollout is Propel, a six-month accelerator supporting ocean, marine and maritime technology ventures that are ready to scale. The program focuses on helping businesses strengthen their commercial pathways, develop partnerships and secure investment while connecting them directly with industry and government networks.

For Fremantle, this represents an opportunity to attract high-value innovation, support local startups and strengthen connections between research, industry and global markets. The program aligns closely with the city’s ambition to grow a diverse and future-focused economy built on its coastal and maritime strengths.

BEIP WA is delivered through a collaboration of leading organisations including Ocean Impact Organisation, For Blue, the UWA Oceans Institute and The Hub on SX, with support from the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification, the City of Cockburn, the City of Fremantle and Austrade.

Western Australia is the first location to activate this national model, with Fremantle playing a central role in connecting local innovation to international opportunity.
