Fremantle is well known for its green image and environmentally conscious reputation, but achieving true sustainability will require building more housing to the city centre, where people can easily walk, cycle, and live with a lighter footprint.
Calling for a collaborative reassessment, which would be crucial in making Fremantle a genuinely sustainable, walkable urban environment that reduces car dependency.
Decarbonisation is a global trend that will reshape industries, and Fremantle can play a central role as a connector of industry, government, academia and the community to co-create solutions.
A robust green economy is linked to growing demand for battery technology, sustainable development and renewable energy, which are pillars in the development of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies.
The green economy contributes $58 million in output and $25 million in Gross Value Added (GVA) each representing 0.6% of Fremantle’s total. This highlights a small but emerging sector with room for strategic expansion.
There are 167 local jobs in the green economy, representing 0.5% of total local employment. Notably, 245 Fremantle residents are employed in green economy roles, or 1.2% of total residents suggesting that while local employment in the sector is low, many residents are contributing to green jobs outside the area. As noted by the Federal Government, there is great potential for Australia to support Southeast Asia’s energy transition, to position clean and cheap energy as Australia’s competitive advantage, via the export of renewables, clean energy expertise and technology.
The WA Government aims to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and is working on reduction strategies in collaboration with business, industry, and research institutions.
Fremantle is well placed to support opportunities that cement WA’s position as a sustainable partner in the supply chains of the world’s emerging industries.
