Major Esplanade Hotel Refurbishment Underway

17 August 2026

One of Fremantle's most recognisable hospitality assets is entering an exciting new chapter, with significant refurbishment works underway at the Esplanade Hotel.

The revitalisation project will enhance guest experiences while building on the hotel's long-standing role as a key accommodation, conference and events destination in Fremantle.

The refurbishment represents an important investment in the city's visitor economy, strengthening the infrastructure that supports tourism, business events and corporate travel. As Fremantle's largest hotel, the Esplanade Hotel plays a vital role in welcoming visitors and provides high quality conference and event spaces.

The project's refreshed design, including the striking transformation of the hotel lobby and atrium, reflects a commitment to maintaining high-quality hospitality experiences while celebrating the character of the hotel. In addition to the visual improvements, the project will deliver significant upgrades to the venue's conference and event capabilities, further enhancing its capacity to attract major business events and visitors to the city.

Esplanade Hotel General Manager Jacqueline Comb said the refurbishment was an investment in both the hotel's future and the broader Fremantle community.

"The Esplanade Hotel has been part of Fremantle’s story for almost 130 years, so this refurbishment is a meaningful investment in both the building and the city’s future. It is about honouring the character that makes the hotel so special, while refreshing key spaces so we can continue to remain competitive in attracting the next generation of guests, delegates and visitors.

Fremantle has a strong identity as a destination, and the Esplanade Hotel plays an important role in that. Our hotel thrives in celebrating the city’s vibrant spirit, welcoming upwards of 200,000 guests to experience a stay, a meal or attend a conference each year.  By enhancing our offering as one of the largest Conference and Event spaces in Western Australia, we increase our ability to attract International and National business events.  This drives not only direct economic contribution, but community engagement and resilience to our Fremantle economy.

Rydges Hotels operate quality city, suburban and resort-style hotels in key destinations across Australia and New Zealand, with a refreshingly down-to-earth approach.  The Rydges portfolio appeals to both leisure and business travellers looking for quality and value and sits alongside the broader EVT stable of hotel brands including Atura Hotels, QT Hotels and Resorts, Lylo and Independent Collection by Event."

The hotel will remain in operation throughout the refurbishment which is being conducted in a staged approach. We look forward to following the project's progress and sharing further updates as the refurbishment continues.
