Fremantle Prison: $3 Million Committed to Conservation
The Western Australian Government has allocated $3 million over two years in the 2026–27 State Budget to continue conservation works at Fremantle Prison, reinforcing its long-term commitment to one of the state's most significant heritage sites.
Since 2017, the State Government has invested more than $20 million into the site — a sustained commitment to preserving a place that draws over 200,000 national and international visitors to Fremantle each year through its diverse programming.
The new funding will enable the next round of conservation projects at Fremantle Prison to further improve the site and enhance the visitor experience at this UNESCO World Heritage-listed destination. Current works include the fit-out of the former Guards Room, which is being transformed into the new Prison Gift Shop.
Fremantle Prison is a cornerstone of the city's visitor economy. Continued investment in the site supports local businesses and strengthens Fremantle's appeal as a destination worth visiting, returning to, and investing in.
Heritage Minister Simone McGurk said:
"A visit to the Prison is a popular activity in the Fremantle community, supporting local businesses and the broader Western Australian tourism industry, and I look forward to seeing the new events and experiences that can be realised from this investment.
